UPDATE: The latest entry into Apple's greenwash-o-rama, Macbook Air, claims to use less hazardous and environmentally destructive packaging. UM... MAYBE BECAUSE IT'S SMALLER? DUH?! Alert the presses when you invent a biodegradable LCD guys.
Despite Apple's notorious GREENWASHING campaign, the fact remains that the IPOD is one of the worst scourges to the environment in recent memory.
1. Batteries
instead of promoting a standard battery design, apple uses custom batteries, making them difficult to replace, which brings us to ...
2. Planned obsolescence
Apple-meister Steve Jobs once said everyone should get a new IPOD every year. The BALLS on this guy! You can just multiply the environmental impact of every IPOD customer by 10, thanks to this wasteful philosophy.
3. Popularity
The IPOD wouldn't be such a problem, if it were a dud. The fact is, it's a hit, and changed mp3 players forever. This means that the terrible environmental impact doesn't just stop at Apple. Nearly every other competitor now shares the IPODs environmental defects!

Al Gore is on the Board of Directors of Apple. Surely he could have pulled some strings and said, "HEY YOU NEED TO SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT!"
